Sending and Receiving Pictures
Customers can send and receive pictures and other media files using Bluetooth® wireless technology.
Note: The file transfer feature is not available for BlackBerry® smartphones running BlackBerry® Device Software 4.1 or earlier,or between BlackBerry smartphones running BlackBerry Device Software 4.2 and 4.1.
Send and Receive Files Between Two BlackBerry Smartphones Using Bluetooth Wireless Technology

BlackBerry Device Software 5.0
- Enable Bluetooth technology on the BlackBerry smartphones. For more information, see the Turn on Bluetooth technologysection of your BlackBerry User Guide.
- Make the BlackBerry smartphones discoverable. For more information, see theMake your BlackBerry device discoverablesection of your BlackBerry User Guide.
- Pair the BlackBerry smartphones. For more information, see thePair with a Bluetooth enabled devicesection of your BlackBerry User Guide.
- Set the Trusted field to Yes on both BlackBerry smartphones by completing the following steps:
- In the Bluetooth application, highlight the BlackBerry smartphone then click Menu.
- Select Device Properties.
- Set the Trusted field to Yes.
- Press the Menu button and select Save.
- Send and receive the transferred file.
On the recipient's BlackBerry smartphone
- On the Home screen of the BlackBerry smartphone, select Media.
- Select a media type (Music, Video, Ring Tones, Pictures).
- Click Menu, and then select Receive using Bluetooth. The File Transfer dialog box appears, followed by a prompt to Save or Cancel the file.
- Select Save to save the file to the current location, or click the folder icon to save the file in a different location.
On the sender's BlackBerry smartphone
- On the Home screen of the BlackBerry smartphone, select Media.
- Select the same media type selected on the recipient's BlackBerry smartphone.
- ClickMenu, and select Send Using Bluetooth.
- When prompted to select a BlackBerry smartphone, select the recipient's BlackBerry smartphone.
BlackBerry Device Software 6.0 to 7.0
- Enable Bluetooth technology on the BlackBerry smartphones. For more information, see the Turn on Buetoothtechnologysection of your BlackBerry User Guide.
- Make the smartphones discoverable. For more information, see the Make your BlackBerry device discoverable section of your BlackBerry User Guide.
- Pair the smartphones. For more information, see the Pair with a Bluetooth enabled device section of your BlackBerry User Guide.
- Set the Trusted field to Yes on both BlackBerry smartphones by completing the following steps:
- On the Home screen, click the connections area at the top of the screen, or click the Manage Connections icon.
- For 7.0 only, click Networks and Connections. For 6.0, proceed to the next step.
- Click Bluetooth Connections.
- Highlight the BlackBerry smartphone, and then press the Menu key.
- Select Device Properties.
- Set the Trusted field to Yes.
- Click Menu, and then select Save.
- Send and receive the transferred file.
On the recipient's BlackBerry smartphone
BlackBerry Device Software 6.0 and 7.0 has a universal receive mode for all paired and trusted devices. When two BlackBerry smartphones have been paired, a smartphone running BlackBerry Device Software 6.0 or 7.0 can receive files at any time as long as the two smartphones are in range of each other, and the other paired Bluetooth device is trusted.
After a file is sent from a trusted device to a smartphone running BlackBerry Device Software 6.0 or 7.0, the user receives the following prompt to save the file as well as provide a file name: “Please choose the location where you wish to save the file.”
Note: To determine the origin of incoming Bluetooth connections, make sure that paired BlackBerry smartphones are configured to prompt and not set to trust.
On the sender's BlackBerry smartphone
- On the Home screen of the BlackBerry smartphone, select Media.
- Choose the media type you want to send (Music, Videos, Pictures, Ring Tones, or Voice Notes).
- Highlight the file you want to send.
- Click Menu, and then select Send > Bluetooth.
- When prompted to select a device, select the recipient's BlackBerry smartphone.
Enable Bluetooth Technology
BlackBerry Device Software 6.0 to 7.0
- On the Home screen, click the connections area at the top of the screen, or click the Manage Connections icon.
- Select the Bluetooth check box.
To turn off Bluetooth technology, clear the Bluetooth check box.
Make the BlackBerry Smartphone Discoverable
If customers make a BlackBerry smartphone discoverable, other Bluetooth enabled devices can detect the BlackBerry smartphone.
BlackBerry Device Software 5.0
- On the Home screen, click the connections area at the top of the screen, or click the Manage Connections icon.
- Click Bluetooth Options.
- Set the Discoverable field to 2 Minutes. After two minutes, the Discoverable field switches to No automatically.
BlackBerry Device Software 6.0
- On the Home screen, click the connections area at the top of the screen, or click the Manage Connections icon.
- Click Bluetooth Connections.
- Set the Discoverable field to 2 Minutes.
- Press the Menu key.
- Click Close.
BlackBerry Device Software 7.0
- On the Home screen, click the connections area at the top of the screen, or click the Manage Connections icon.
- Click Networks and Connections.
- Click Bluetooth Connections.
- Set the Discoverable field to 2 Minutes.After two minutes, the Discoverable field switches to No automatically.
Pair BlackBerry Smartphone with a Bluetooth Enabled Device
You must pair your BlackBerry device with a Bluetooth enabled device before you can connect to it. For more information about preparing the Bluetooth enabled device for pairing, see the documentation that came with the Bluetooth enabled device.
BlackBerry Device Software 5.0
- On the Home screen, click the connections area at the top of the screen, or click the Manage Connections icon.
- Click Bluetooth Options > Add New Device > Search.
- Click a Bluetooth enabled device.
- If necessary, do one of the following:
- If the Bluetooth enabled device does not have a keyboard (for example, a wireless headset), on your BlackBerry device, type the pairing passkey that either appears on the Bluetooth enabled device or is provided in the documentation that came with the Bluetooth enabled device. The passkey is most often a numeric or alphanumeric code. Note: 0000 is often a common default passkey for Bluetooth devices.
- If the Bluetooth enabled device has a keyboard (for example, a laptop), you will be prompted with an auto generated passkey on both devices that must be accepted.
